Obituary

Adrian Godfrey Swanstrom, Jr., 97 years young, passed from this life to the next on June 21, 2025 in Marietta, Georgia. We are certain that he heard those familiar and comforting words, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant".

The youngest of four children, Adrian was born in Foley, Alabama, to Adrian Godfrey Swanstrom and Marie Lehr Swanstrom. His mother's family were some of the original residents of Foley, and Adrian was always proud that his dad and uncle owned the first sawmill, ice plant, and electric company.

The family was always involved in activities at the First Presbyterian Church in Foley, and Adrian sang his first solo in church at age 14. He had a lovely baritone voice and continued to sing in church choirs and community choruses throughout most of his life.

After high school, he enlisted in the Army and served in occupied Japan at the end of WW II, after which he was honorably discharged.  Always proud to be an American and a veteran, Adrian had a life membership in the American Legion.

After serving his country, Adrian continued his education at Lees-McRae Junior College in Banner Elk, North Carolina, where he met his "one and only", Lois Evalee Owens. They were inseparable until graduation, after which Adrian went to East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee for a business degree, and Evalee went to Abingdon, Virginia to become a nurse. Soon after graduation, they were reunited and married in 1953, enjoying 72 years together.

After returning to Foley with his degree, Adrian became an insurance claims adjuster, which he continued until his retirement. Adrian loved to help people, and one of his special passions was working "storm duty", helping people recover after their property had been damaged by tornadoes, hurricanes, and ice storms.

Adrian was honored as "Boss of the Year" by the Insurance Women's Association of Athens, Georgia. In addition to singing in the choir, he also stayed active in the Presbyterian Church as a Sunday School teacher and superintendent, and was an ordained deacon and elder.

Adrian loved woodworking, and always had a project going at his workbench, anything from a piece of furniture to a woodcarving. He even made several ukuleles!

Adrian is survived by his "one and only", Evalee Owens Swanstrom, daughters Alesia Swanstrom Jones (Steve), Maria Swanstrom Oswalt (Mark), and Adriana Swanstrom Freeman (Al), six grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held on July 24, the date of Adrian and Evalee's 72nd wedding anniversary, 2:00-5:00 p.m. at the home of their daughter Alesia. Family and friends are invited to drop in and share their fond memories of Adrian.
