Betty J. Johnson, 91, of Marietta, died Wednesday, May 27, 2020. Due to the statewide health mandated restrictions for the COVID-19 pandemic, a private graveside service will be held on Monday, June 1, 2020 at Kennesaw Memorial Park with Dr. Ike Reighard officiating.
Mrs. Johnson was the only child of Troy and Lucille Ridings. She was born in a house that once sat behind where Wellstar Kennestone Hospital sits today. She never moved from Marietta in her 91 years.
She married Jesse T. Johnson on October 11, 1946 and they had 3 children during their 61 years of marriage. Jesse died in 2008 and she continued to live in the house that they shared together since 1954.
Mrs. Johnson was a longtime member of Eastwood Baptist Church. When she was young and while raising her children, she was a member of Mt. Arbor Baptist Church.
She was also, active for many years in the VFW post 2681 in Marietta.
She enjoyed gospel music and it played continuously at her home. She loved to read her Bible and watch church services on television. Daytona Beach was one of her favorite places and she made many happy vacation memories there while vacationing.
She was a full time Mother and homemaker while her children were young before working as an office manager for Johnson Ambulance Service during her mid years.
Mrs. Johnson was instrumental in getting Gritters Fire Station in the community where they lived. She worked with Blackwell Elementary School PTA to get petitions signed that resulted in the fire station being built to support the North Cobb area.
She was spunky and very independent. She lived alone and drove her own car until just a few years ago. She loved her family and prayed for them continuously.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Jesse T. Johnson and her daughter, Debbie Gassett. Survivors include her daughter, Gwen Sutton of Marietta; son, Chuck (Cindy) Johnson of Marietta; son-in-law, Lee Gassett of Kennesaw; grandchildren, Kim (Rachel) Jones, Tammy (Tony) Hollifield, Dawn (Scott) Carter, Kristi Hawkins, Ali (JD) Daly, and Garrett Strunk (Alex); 11 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren plus a set of twins on the way.
