Obituary

Billye Jo Fuchs, a gifted artist, loving mother, grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2026 at the age of 82. She brought creativity, grace, and artistic beauty into every corner of her world, especially through her artwork. From dancing to musicals such as “South Pacific” and “Oklahoma” while cleaning house to helping with Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, she made life fun and helped those around her find joy in the small things.

Born on September 1, 1944, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Billye Jo attended the University of Arkansas, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Her early career showcased her talent for hand-lettering advertisements for Brown-Dunkin department stores (now Dillard’s).

After moving to Atlanta in the early 1970s, she worked as a switch-board telephone operator for BellSouth before becoming a graphic designer at Ruralist Art Studio- a production hub for regional print media that served as part of the pipeline for printing telephone and Yellow Page directories across Georgia and Metro Atlanta. She always spoke about the wonderful smell of paper and ink when visiting the YP printing presses, but joked they weren’t that loud because she could turn her hearing aids off. Billye Jo was a traditional graphic artist during the era of wax boards, hand paste-ups, and meticulous manual design.

After leaving Ruralist, she freelanced for Pilot Company gas stations, designing their iconic billboards and regional signage. In her later professional years, she worked for NCR in Duluth, Georgia.

She was a woman of deep warmth, quiet resilience, and creative spirit. A large box of stories she wrote about her life remains to share the memories she held dear - especially the one of sharing marshmallows from the icebox with her grandmother when she was a little girl. Her love of telling stories rivaled her love of creating art.

She found great joy in the companionship of her many pets in her lifetime. Papi, Peanut Butter, Poky, Coco, Billabong, Bimini, Tommy the Cat, along with Captain and PeeWee, the hermit crabs - plus the numerous goldfish, betta fish, anole lizards, gerbils, and all the baby chicks from her childhood. Her animals brought her joy but she sure got tired of cleaning up after them.

Billye Jo was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Fuchs, in January 2017, as well as her parents, Kirk K. Hale, Sr. and Letha Crain Hale, her sister, Judy Wortman, and her brother, Kirk Hale, Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Tracey Layman; her son-in-law, Randy Layman; her son, Harrison Hale Fuchs; and her grandson, Christopher Layman.

A small family service will be held at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia, where she will be reunited with her husband, Bill Fuchs. Bill and Billye (or Billy and Bill) will be together again - names so interchangeable they often created mischievous confusion for those who knew them.

Flowers are welcomed but memorial donations may be made in Billye Jo’s honor to Georgia Artists with Disabilities (https://www.georgiaartistswd.org/donation.php). The organization gave her so much encouragement in her artwork, and her family hopes that same spirit of creativity will continue to inspire other artists.
