Mr. Clarence W. Johnson, age 81, of Marietta, Georgia passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

The family will receive visitors at Marietta Funeral Home on Saturday, March 30, 2024 from 12:00PM - 2:00PM. The funeral service for Mr. Johnson will be on Saturday, March 30, 2024 at 2:00PM in the Chapel at Marietta Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest at Maple Grove Cemetery in Queens, New York in the care of J. Foster Phillips Funeral Home .

Flight Number 61742 started its long journey on June 17, 1942, in Waterproof, Louisiana with its passenger Clarence Walter Johnson on board. Clarence was the seventh child of Sargent and Mary Johnson. Clarence was baptized at an early age by his father, Reverend Sargent Johnson at the Villa Clara Baptist Church in St. Joseph LA. He started his education at Delta Bridge Elementary School in rural Louisiana. Clarence continued his education from elementary through high school, at Tensas Rosenwald High. Yes, first through twelfth grades shared the same campus. After graduating from high school in 1962, he and his brother Stewart boarded a bus to Brooklyn, NY for the next leg of his flight.

In 1964, Clarence's journey continued as he joined the United States Navy where he served as his ship's head barber. He also trained others to become barbers.

After four years in the Navy, Clarence returned to Brooklyn, NY to resume his civilian life. He began his career in security at Holmes Protection where he worked for 35 years. He became Chief Technician and an expert in alarm systems. He retired in 2000.

Clarence was truly a family man. He loved being around his family, especially his children and grandchildren. He welcomed his first child, Lashawn in June 1969. He married Louise Richards and from that union, he welcomed two sons, Clarence and Cleophus. On June 11, 1983, Clarence married his second wife Sylvia King and from that union, he welcomed his third son, Curtis. Clarence and Sylvia were inseparable until his passing.

Not only was Clarence family oriented, but he was also a brave community servant. He once entered a burning building and saved a woman and her daughter. He also tracked down a missing elderly woman and found her secure shelter until her death. On separate occasions, he provided a decent burial for two of his neighbors.

Clarence's spiritual journey began in Louisiana. He continued this journey at the Bethany Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY. He was a member of the Usher Board and their recording secretary until he relocated to Georgia. In 2004, Clarence and Sylvia purchased a home in Marietta, Georgia. They completed their move to Marietta in 2009 after Sylvia retired.

He joined the Shady Grove Baptist Church in Marietta, GA in 2009 and continued to be actively involved. In 2014, he became an ordained deacon of the church and was part of the finance committee until his health no longer allowed him to serve.

Clarence was quite chatty and he enjoyed making people laugh. He loved company and always welcomed out-of-town guests. He was the life of the party.

Clarence was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Sargent Johnson; his son, Curtis; his brothers, Henry Lee, Sargent Jr., Alvin and Caliph; and his sister, Ira Collins. He leaves to mourn his wife, Sylvia; his daughter, Lashawn; his sons, Clarence and Cleophus (Melody); his brothers, Stewart(Sylvia), and Yusuf Amin (Arunsri); his sisters, Ruby Batson, Katie Johnson and Carrie DeVeaux; his nine grandchildren, Dionna, Maria, Jalena, Amari, Amira, Amaya, Jason, Alex and Alyssa; great grandchildren, Tiana, Kylan, Nadia, Josia, Zechariah, Naomie; and a plethora of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Flight Number 61742 reached its destination on Wednesday, March 20, 2024. On this flight, there were ups and downs, joys, sorrows, gains, losses, successes and failures. Clarence Walter Johnson's flight has now landed safely at his eternal heavenly home, where there are no downs, no sorrows, no pains, no losses, no sickness or death, or failures.
