David "Dave" Charles Horn, an orchestral musician, composer and teacher died on June 25, 2020 at the age of 67 after an extended battle with cancer.

Dave is survived by his son, Christopher Paden Horn, his granddaughter, Autumn Elise Horn, both of Acworth, Georgia, his sisters Penny Jean (Tom) Palkovic of Niskayuna, New York and Pamela Joan (Tim) Marlette of Hilton Head, South Carolina along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma Katherine (Howard) Horn, his parents Max Wilson Horn and Harriet Winifred (Baumann) Horn, and his brother Douglas Craig Horn.

Dave was born on October 29, 1952 in Toledo, Ohio and spent his formative years in Toledo, Ohio; Littleton, Colorado; and Elizabethtown, Kentucky.  For most of his adult life, he made his home in Elizabethtown and Louisville, Kentucky and Georgetown, Indiana, before retiring to Hyden, Kentucky and eventually to Acworth, Georgia.

As a child Dave was inquisitive and creative.  He invented many a board game, built numerous rockets, launching mice in the backyard and spent long hours testing chemicals with his chemistry set, once setting an entire field on fire with a cherry bomb much to the chagrin of his parents, his neighbors and the local fire department.

As a high schooler, his interests migrated to music.  He first mastered the saxophone, then the piano and finally settling on the bassoon.  He attended Morehead University after high school, ultimately graduating from the University of Louisville School of Music with a masters degree in music performance and education. In 1974, he joined the Louisville Orchestra as their second bassoonist.  He remained with the orchestra in excess of 30 years.  Additionally, Dave served as the first bassoonist for The Louisville Bach Society for 20 years and performed with the Kentucky Center Chamber Players.  Dave was a composer, arranger and bassoon teacher.  His favorite composers were Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Gustav Mahler.  For several years, Dave served as the Louisville Orchestra union steward and was a member of the Louisville Orchestra Membership Committee.

Dave enjoyed home renovation and construction.  In Louisville, he renovated an old Victorian home for his family and eventually constructed a log cabin in Georgetown, Indiana. He enjoyed fishing with his friends.

There was never a dull moment if you were lucky to call him a friend.  He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.
