Ersie met his childhood sweetheart (Polly) at Blackwell school.  Later, Ersie went to work for the National Youth Administration, and they sent him to Georgia Tech to learn welding.  Polly worked for the NYA where she met Ersie again.  Cupid showed up and they fell in love.  When WWII started, Ersie worked at the Charleston Navy Yard helping build ships to protect our country and the world.  He started to miss the love of his life, so after a short time, he returned to Marietta to marry Polly.  They moved to Charleston, and a year later Polly came back to Marietta for the birth of their first child, Charles.  Ersie joined the Navy.  He later was made Master at Arms over the mess hall in Jacksonville, Florida.  He received a medical discharge and received 100% disability from the Navy.  He was offered a job at Glover's Machine Works as a welder, where he later became Superintendent.  He retired after working at Glover's for 42 years.  He was an avid gardener and bee keeper.  Ersie loved his family, his country and was proud to be an American.  Most of all through the years, Ersie came to love God and God's Word "The Bible" and He loved sharing the Gospel with others.  Ersie joined Mt. Arbor Baptist Church in 1954 where he served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and as Chairman of Deacons.

Ersie is preceded in death by his parents, Babe and Maybell Jones Hamby, son, Tommy Hamby and is survived by his wife of 76 years, Polly Hamby, his children, Charles (Linda) Hamby of Temple, Judy (Jr.) Aaron of Canton, Faye (Jim) Nash of Blairsville, Barry Hamby of Marietta, and David (Beth) of Temple.  27 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 32 great-great grandchildren; and 3 great-great-great grandchildren.
