James Shapleigh Cochrane was born December 26th, 1970 in Huntsville, Al and passed away March 25th 2021 in Marietta, Ga.

As part of a military family he lived many places throughout his childhood, from Germany to Hawaii and many places in between. The family returned to and settled in Huntsville where he graduated from Grissom High School. While at Grissom he was active in their JROTC program as well as the Explorers program, making many lifelong friends there. He went on to attend and graduate from Georgia Tech.

James was an active and vocal sportsman from high school onward in several sports. If you knew him, you knew the sports, as he was active and vocal about them.

James was an avid reader, contributor, and member of the Science Fiction community throughout the Southeastern US. He regularly attended and participated in Science Fiction conventions, with Dragoncon and Libertycon as two of his favorites. He always joked about how when he first started to attend Dragoncon it was all still in one hotel. He was a family member to those at Libertycon, as well as a regular face at Many Baen Barfly events.

James enjoyed traveling. There were many fine memories from a trip he took to Europe with his daughter Katie. He enjoyed the multiple trips to Alaska he had taken, and was already talking about taking another cruise there in the future.

James enjoyed mentoring and teaching others, particularly women and children. He was an advocate for safety, awareness, and self defense. He filled the role of a "third" parent to his younger brother, David, and was idolized as a result.

He is survived by his wife Ginger, daughter Katie, former wife Julie, brother David (Angela, Byron, Alessia), mother Katherine Prawl, aunt Marti Evans (Tom), uncle Craig Watson (Rebecca), grandfather J. Brooks Watson, as well as several cousins and their children. He was preceded in death by his father, MAJ John Shapleigh Cochrane (US Army, Ret.).

Memorial and internment arrangements are pending for safety reasons, and will be announced at a later date.
