James F.
Rice, Sr.
Dec 4, 1941 — Apr 17, 2021
Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, James Forrest Rice, 79, of Marietta, Georgia, passed away at home on April 17, 2021. Jim was born on December 4, 1941, to Ernest F. Rice and Edra E.Arnett Rice, who predeceased him.
Jim grew up in Kentucky and was most proud to be a son of the Bluegrass State. He was raised in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, graduating from Catlettsburg High School in 1959, serving as Senior Class President and captain of the football team. He then attended Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky, graduating in 1964. After college, Jim volunteered to join the U.S. Army, and served a year in Vietnam in the Signal Corps during the Tet Counter Offensive. While in the U.S. Army, he was awarded the Bronze Star medal and the Army Commendation Medal for heroic and meritorious acts in combat. After achieving the rank of Captain, Jim chose to complete his term in 1970, after five years in the U.S. Army, to join the corporate world. After a long successful career with Eastman Kodak, Jim retired to pursue other interests. His favorite activities were spending time with his family and spoiling his grandchildren. In addition, Jim enjoyed Kentucky Wildcats basketball and Indy car racing and would gladly talk about these topics to no end.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Sharon Layne Rice and their children: Angela Rice Dziwoki and son-in-law, Allan; James F. Rice, Jr.; and Kristan Rice Carter. Jim was also the proud grandfather of three granddaughters: Layne Dziwoki; Kaylin Carter; and Alayna Carter. He will be greatly missed by his family.
