Obituary

John Milton Stone, born on December 31, 1938 to Garrett and Jean Stone in Lexington, Kentucky, passed away on Friday, March 15, 2024.

John is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and sister, Shirley Todd and her husband Billy Todd.  John's family includes his wife, Joan Wainwright Stone, of Jacksonville, Florida and their six children; son, John Garrett Stone and wife Patricia, grandchildren: Rebekah Tran, Elizabeth Shepard, and Kaitlyn Rose of Austin Texas; son, Hugh David Stone and wife Lisa of Kentucky, grandchildren: David Stone of Kentucky, Andrea Fillingane, and Christa Stone of Colorado; son, Thomas Edward Stone of Georgia, Howard Pittman (widow Jessie), Grandchildren: Ivan, Joshua, Kirtus, Graydon, Lucimae, Evelyn and Rowynee Pittman of Fairfield Montana; daughter, Sarah Shurden and husband Jon of Canton Georgia; daughter, Shirley Girard and her husband Matthew, grandchildren: Ashlyn, Camryn and baby girl due April 19, of Marietta Georgia.  John leaves many great grandchildren and extended family.

John spent 23 years active Army serving in the Army Security Agency and the Intelligence and Security Command. During that time, he served stateside in Massachusetts, Fort Meade Maryland, Vint Hills Farms Virginia, and Fort Sam Houston Texas. Overseas he served in the Aleutian Islands, Turkey, Okinawa, Vietnam, and Germany. During this time, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct with silver knot, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 campaign oak leaf's, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Cold War Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation with oak leaf, Army Meritorious Unit Citation with two oak leaf's, and Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm.

John graduated from the University of New York with the Associate of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees and the Southern Baptist Seminary with the Master of Divinity degree. He pastored churches in Massachusetts, Turkey, Texas, Germany and Ohio.

John worked 19 additional years with the Department of Defense.  He retired as a GS13. During that time he was awarded many letters of Commendation and the Civilian Commendation Medal.

The funeral service for John will be held on Sunday, March 17, 2024 at 2:00pm at Marietta Funeral Home. The family will receive friends and visitors from 1:00-2:00pm prior to the funeral service. Mr. Stone will be laid to rest at Turpin Cemetery in Winston, Kentucky.
