Joseph "Jim" W. Moore

1927 – 2022

Jim, age 94 of Marietta, went to be with our Lord on September 6, 2022, passing away peacefully at home with family members present.

He was born October 4, 1927 to Ernest A. and Louie Nell Mabry Moore in Gainesville, GA.  He grew up in Gainesville, surviving the great tornado of 1936 that killed over 200 people and injured over 1600.  It's still the worst natural disaster in Georgia history.

Jim moved to Mobile, AL with his family when WWII began and worked in the shipyards building the Liberty ships while in high school.  He left high school at age 17 and enlisted in the Navy where he was stationed on the U.S.S. Tucson in 1945.  Serving in the Pacific under Admiral Halsey escorting aircraft carriers, he was honorably discharged in 1946.

Returning to Atlanta he attended Fulton High School to finish his senior year.  There he met the love of his life, Margaret. They were married September 19, 1947. His passing was just 13 days shy of their 75 ^th wedding anniversary.  Upon graduating high school, he started working for Firestone and began taking night classes at the University of Georgia, Atlanta Division.  After 4 years of night school, he transferred to the University of Tennessee, graduating with a B.S. in Business Administration.  He started his career in 1956 with Atlantic Coastline Railroad and retired in 1987 from Seaboard Systems.

After retiring, he served in the Kiwanis Club of Jonquil, Smyrna, GA for over 25 years.  Jim was elected club president in 1993-1994, was Kiwanian of the year in 2011-2012, and received the Legion of Honor Award.  A member of Roswell Street Baptist Church, he lived the life of faith and service to the Lord.  Jim was always doing charity work, Meals on Wheels, and various community service projects.  He took up golf after retirement and would play a couple times a week with friends and family.

He enjoyed traveling; rafting the Grand Canyon several times, taking river cruises down the Seine and Danube Rivers, and cruising the Alaskan coast.  He took trips to China and Antarctica with a stop off in Argentina.  He loved the beach and would take the whole family to Panama City Beach for a week-long summer vacation every year.

Jim was an avid reader, always having a book nearby.  He enjoyed historical books along with biographies and books on golf.  In his younger days Jim enjoyed Nascar, never missing a Daytona 500, even going when they actually raced on the beach.  He liked all sports and was a big fan of the Braves, Falcons and especially the Tennessee Vols.

Jim was a loving and caring husband, father and grandparent.  He will be sorely missed by family and friends.  We are thankful to have had him.  He is preceded in death by his father, Ernest A. Moore, mother, Louie Nell Mabry Moore, and brother, Ernest Moore.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret C. Moore; sons Mike (Pamela) of Marietta, and Tim (Julie) of Jacksonville, FL.; grandchildren Amber (Richard) Wills, Ansley (Kevin) Cooper, Margaret A. Moore, Michael C. Moore, Keri (Armando) Manning, Sonya (Marshall) Winkeljohn; great grandchildren Tanner Wills, Connor Wills, Isabella Oliver, Lucy Winkeljohn, Joaquin Fierro.
