Obituary

Juliet Wattles Shugart passed away on February 10, 2025 at the age of 98 in Marietta, Georgia. She died at peace in her sleep.

Juliet was born December 1, 1926, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Charles Edward Wattles and Wilhemina (Wilma) Krabbe. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joe Wilson Shugart, her daughter, Rebecca Wattles Shugart, and her sister, Elsbeth Lewis. She is survived by her sister, Florence Jones, her daughter, Sally Wattles Shugart, two grandchildren, Ilse and Wilson, and many nieces and nephews.

Juliet graduated from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She lived in Athens, Tennessee for over fifty years, and was a longstanding member of the Mars Hill Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir and raised her family in the faith. In the last quarter century of her life, she moved to Georgia to be nearer to family. She always cherished the memory of her travels to Alaska with her husband and her wildflower photography treks with her husband and her sister, Flo.

An ardent reader, a lover of nature and dedicated photographer, a friend to animals and especially to dogs, a regular volunteer, a beloved sister, an aunt, a mother and cherished grandmother, she is lovingly and fondly remembered. Her ashes will be buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Athens, Tennessee, next to her late husband.
