Obituary

Marjorie Cornelia Mills, age 93, of Miami, Florida, formerly of Marietta, GA, died Sunday, December 31, 2023.

She was born to Bettis and Grace Carlile on September 7, 1930. On June 10, 1950, Dr. Mills met Grady Mills on a blind date and six months later they were married. Their marriage lasted 50 years, until Grady passed away in 2001.

During their marriage they served as missionaries in the Dominican Republic for eight years. In preparation to serve, they both attended Tennessee Temple Bible College in Chattanooga, TN, earning a degree in Christian Theology and then took a one-year course in Spanish at the Rio Grande Institute in Edinburg, TX. Following their time in the Dominican Republic, Rev. and Dr. Mills returned to the United States and took teaching jobs at Florida Christian School in Miami, Florida. There, Dr. Mills taught first grade for eight years, followed by three additional years as a high school English and Physical Education teacher. Dr. Mills also served for ten years as the elementary principal at Calusa Preparatory School in Miami, FL.

During her teaching years, Dr. Mills took on-line courses from Covington Theological Seminary earning her bachelor's degree and subsequently, her master's degrees in religious education and psychology. Following her teaching years, Dr. Mills went to work as the comptroller for her son-in-law, Edward Hays, at American Nautical Services, Inc., for twenty years before retiring. At the age of 72, Dr. Mills completed an on-line course from Southwest Bible College & Seminary, earning her degree as Doctor of Philosophy in Christian Counseling Psychology.

Her retirement years were filled with service to her church, leading women's Bible study classes, and marital and grief counseling. Her greatest passion was teaching others about the richness of God's Word and how to study their Bibles.

Dr. Mills was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Grady Mills, her daughter, Brenda Wolf, and her granddaughter, Esther Joy Truax. She is survived by her three daughters: Lauren Hays, Trina Dukes, and Nancy Simmerson, and her son Victor Mills. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.
