Martha Smith Holt, 66, of Marietta, Georgia, passed away peacefully at her home on June 8, 2019. Martha was born on April 10, 1953, the daughter of the late Waring Wright Smith and Nancy Alberts Smith. She grew up in Franklin, Virginia. Martha married Stewart Baldwin Holt on October 16, 1976. They have two children, Stephen Brownley Holt and Nancy Baldwin Holt.
Martha graduated from Virginia Tech in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. She worked as a journalist for the Smyth County News in Marion, Virginia. When Martha and Stewart moved to Marietta in 1977, she worked as a reporter and editor for the Marietta Daily Journal.
Martha was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Marietta. She sang in the choir, played hand-bells, and served as a Church Elder. Martha was an avid reader and an accomplished bridge player. She and Stewart loved hiking. She enjoyed identifying and photographing wildflowers. A highlight of each year, going back to her childhood, was the summer family reunion at the Outer Banks. Martha traveled to many historical sites with her daughter, sister, cousins, and nieces.
Martha is survived by her husband Stewart, children Stephen and Nancy of Marietta, and a sister, Ann Waring Ainsworth of Stephens City, Virginia.
A Memorial Service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2881 Canton Road NE, Marietta, Georgia 30066 on Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at 11:00 am. Pastor Zeta Lamberson is officiating. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church. Online condolences may be expressed at www.mariettafuneralhome.org
