V. Gopinath (known as Gopi to all his family and friends) was laid to rest on April 21, 2022. Gopi was born in 1931 in Bangalore, India. He was the oldest of two boys, born to Kamalamma and Venugopaliyengar. He received his degree in Civil Engineering from University of Mysore and then completed his Master's in Civil Engineering from Bangalore University with the distinction of First Rank and First Class. He began teaching as a Professor in Civil Engineering for BMS College of Engineering in Bangalore, India. He had a reputation of being a tough but great teacher, often challenging his students to think and perform beyond what was required.

In 1963, he met his beautiful wife, Vimala, through family and her brother, who was Gopi's classmate. The two were married and subsequently, had two children, Balaji and Anitha. In 1968, Gopi decided to pursue a life in America after being accepted to the University of Connecticut for his Master's Degree. At that time, many colleges and universities in the USA did not recognize foreign graduate degrees, although foreign students were well-educated in their respective fields of study. He received his Master's in Engineering from University of Connecticut in 1969. Vimala and the two children joined him in 1969, and the family settled in New England moving from Connecticut to Boston, Massachusetts.

Gopi's career spanned many decades, most notably his tenures at Stone & Webster in Boston, Massachusetts, the US Army in Aberdeen, Maryland and the US Department of Energy in Gaithersburg, Maryland, from which he retired.

After retiring in 2000, Gopi and Vimala moved to Marietta, Georgia to be close to their grandchildren. Gopi lived for and loved his children and grandchildren immensely. They were his world and he would often revel in just spending time with them having dinner, talking, or watching tv.

Gopi passed away on April 18, 2022. He was a devoted husband, brother, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Vimala Gopinath, his son Balaji Gopinath and daughter-in-law Rika Gopinath, his daughter Anitha Rao and son-in-law Venki Rao, his brother Srinath Iyengar and sister-in-law Kalpana Iyengar, and his beloved grandchildren - Kiran Rao, Barath Rao, Avinash Gopinath, and Nikhil Gopinath.

We will cherish the time we got to spend with him, and he will always live in our hearts.
